TE TINI A MĀUI

Papaki kau ana ngā tai o mihi

The many descedants of Māui welcome you.

ABOUT US

We are a whānau (family) based Māori cultural dance group based in Vancouver, Canada. Haka keeps us connected to our roots in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

The group started in 2009 to bring together Vancouver based whānau who wanted to sing Māori songs - just because it was something we as Māori did back home in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Before long, we started singing at events throughout Vancouver that promoted New Zealand or supported First Nation community events.

Over time we began to get requests to perform in other parts of British Columbia, then in various cities in the USA. We also represented Canada at the ex-pats Kapa Haka festival with groups from other countries, in Hawai'i in 2013.

Since 2009, we have continued to get together and sing waiata as a wider whānau based in Vancouver, Canada.

We are Māori living in Vancouver who remain connected to our traditional Māori language and practices through our Māori dances and songs.

We continue to support organizations or events that promote Aotearoa, New Zealand as a destination or New Zealand products and of course, celebrates our Māori culture. We also support indigenous group events that celebrate indigeneity and tribal empowerment.

WHAT WE DO

Quality performances supporting New Zealand and indigenous celebration and promotion

We provide a variety of performance options to promote New Zealand and celebrate indigeneity. We can entertain audiences at conferences, at promotional events, ceremonial functions and many more.

We pride ourselves in our ability to tailor our performances to the event.

We are happy to discuss the needs of the event to ensure that we are confident that we are providing the best possible performance that will give you the most WOW and a reflection of our culture back in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Our array of performances can include waiata-ā-ringa (action songs), poi and haka. We can support dignitaries after speeches; welcome visitors; celebrate events; perform after-dinners or workshops - provided they are New Zealand or indigenous focussed.

We have an extensive repertoire of songs and often perform multiple times at single events with both short (5 - 10 minute) or longer (20 - 30 minute) performances.

We're happy to explain what songs mean to audiences and to get people up to be interactive.

Unfortunately we do not perform at family functions like birthdays and funerals. Our performances are strictly for promoting New Zealand and supporting indigenous community events.
